Renowned Nigerian author and feminist Chimamanda Adichie has been awarded the revered Mary McCarthy Award for her work as a writer and prominent public awareness on social issues. She became the first Nigerian to receive the prestigious award at an event that held at Bard College, New York recently. The McCarthy award which is named after famous novelist Mary McCarthy who taught at Bard College for a year, is given in acknowledgement of engagement in the public sphere by an intellectual, artist, or writer. Some other notable recipients of the award are Margaret Atwood (the author of The Handmaid’s Tale), Zadie Smith, Mona Simpson, and Susan Sontag. The Mary McCarthy Prize in short fiction includes a $2,000 cash award, publication of a collection of short stories or novella and a standard royalty contract.  

A man was caught today in Owerri, Imo State, spraying the cucumbers he was selling with liquid in a bottle believed to be his urine. According to Ifeanyi Njoku, he was forced by the mob to drink the urine and also eat the cucumbers. "It took him over 20 minutes before he accepted to drink it" he wrote. Michel Arrion, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS who spoke at a Lecture organised by the IBB Golf Club, with the theme “40 years of European Union in Nigeria: Lessons learned and the way forward” says EU will not increase its financial assistance to Nigeria. He said that Nigeria could not be said to be poor, as it has enough resources to meet its developmental needs. Then he added that despite the fact that EU is not promising further assistance, Nigeria remains a key partner of the EU in view of the role it plays in global affairs.
