Poor Grades:16-Year-Old 100-Level Student Of OAU Dies After Drinking 'Rat Poison Mixed With Battery Extract'

A 16-year old 100-level student of Microbiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mercy Afolaranmi, has committed suicide over poor grades.

According to the school’s Chief Security Officer, Babatunde Oyatokun, Miss Afolaranmi, poisoned herself. Students and a neighbor close to the deceased also said she killed herself due to the poor grade.

“We got a call that one of our students took poison,” Mr. Oyatokun said. “We got to hospital to realise that she mixed rat poison. She gave us the contact of her parents but before they arrived, she already gave up due to the effect of the poison she took.”

A neighbor, Bimpe Oni, in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, said Miss Afolaranmi, who lived off-campus at Sabo area of Ile-Ife, died on Thursday after she took “rat poison mixed with battery extract.

Corporal David Napoleon, a police officer attached to the Department of Operations at the Bayelsa State Police Command shot and killed a Senior Secondary School Student identified as Joseph Tomizibe on Thursday, October 26.

The incident which happened in Kpansia community sparked protest with residents blocking the road and causing traffic gridlock along the busy Yenagoa-Mbiama road. The policeman was said to have been arrested, disarmed and detained for further investigations.

Can you share with us the story of your journey into the entertainment world?

It is an interesting journey filled with ups and downs. I started out as a chorister in a church and began singing. I was doing more of gospel music. But my acting started as a child, back when I was in primary two. I started with Nestle Nido’s show, and I won Coca-Cola and Indomine shows by Sound Sultan, with W4. I would say my heart was more with singing than acting but when people were relating me to Tonto Dikeh, saying I look a lot like her and that I should be into acting because I have the looks, the character and carriage, I knew acting must be my destiny. But the real push came when a friend introduced me to a producer.

If you saw this picture you would think that she's dead. I was alarmed and called, what's happening?

She said that's her in the hospital and yet it's not gotten better. I said, whats wrong with you, any diagnosis yet? She said It's terrible oh. I said, please I'm busy oh, we can't dramatize things, what's going on. Listen to her reply below... Nigerian musician, Folarin Falana, known as ‘Falz’, in an interview, stated that Musicians don’t care about the lyrics because Nigerians just want to dance.

The ‘jejely’ crooner stated this in an Interview with News Agency of Nigeria where he stated that most musicians are forced to dance to the tune of the masses.

He said;

“It is correct to say that a lot of artists are not concerned about lyrical content because they know that the Nigerian people just want to dance.

Couple and their 3rd son dead, others fighting for their lives after eating Ugba (oil bean) in Imo state

A man, his wife and their 3rd son from Ohanaga of Umuokoro, Umukwu Onicha in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA of Imo State are reportedly dead after eating Ugba (Oil bean).

According to information gathered by Mentorslink, the wife who bought the Ugba, prepared it for the family, and just after eating, they all started having stomach upset.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria and the 19 commercial banks in the country to disclose all accounts in their custody and the balances in such accounts.

The court ordered the banks to disclose the details of all such accounts, their owners and their proceeds in their affidavit of compliance deposed to by their Chief Compliance Officers.

It also made an interim order directing the banks to freeze all the said accounts by stopping “all outward payments, operations or transactions” pending the hearing of the substantive application seeking the forfeiture of the balances in the accounts to the Federal Government.

The banks were also directed to disclose “any investments made with funds from these accounts without BVN in any products”.

Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, insisted that people who expected so much from him and Ghanaian actress, Nadia Bauri, forgot that they were into show business.

In a new interview with Punch, he says, “Things didn’t get messy as people thought. Two people met in the entertainment industry and there was a reality show at a time that kept us together. So, we did a smart thing anybody who found himself or herself in such situation would have done. And when the entertainment was over, we moved on to our normal lives.”

He also adds, “For anyone who thought anything extraordinary happened, it was a live show except that it played into our personal lives too. I got what I wanted, which was followership and I appreciate the audience for watching. She understood what she was coming into and I understood as well.
