President Trump awarded a Purple Heart to a wounded service member during a Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Saturday.
During the short ceremony, the president placed the Purple Heart on the right lapel of Sgt. First Class Alvaro Barrientos, according to a pool report.
When I heard about this and I wanted to do this, myself," Trump said, thanking the service member. Trump's wife Melania was also in attendance.
Barrientos was recently injured while deployed in Afghanistan and for the wounds he sustained, he received the Purple Heart, a White House official said.
Barrientos' wife Tammy was also present.
Walter Reed is located in Bethesda, Md., across the street from the headquarters of the National Institutes of Health.
Former President Barack Obama made frequent visits with the wounded at the military medical facility during his time at the white house.
