Today the rap icon released the single “I’m Better”—more than a decade since her last studio album—and the wildly imaginative music video proves that she hasn’t lost her touch. That goes double in the beauty department, where Elliott demonstrated that she is still the master of avant-garde hair and makeup—taking on blush contour and glitter lips in her videos long before those trends went mainstream.

She begins with a blunt, vision-obscuring set of bangs and a reflective black cut-out appliqued over the mouth, followed by a pink-tinged Mohawk and frosted lips. 

The latter comes paired with violet shadow and a swoosh of glitter traced along the cheekbone and dripping down the neck, a seemingly mermaid-inspired wink at the underwater setting.
